      About us

New technologies, metadata and algorithms influence every aspect of everyday life. It is necessary to bring together a multidisciplinary research effort to investigate how society has been building and adapting to these innovations. NetLab is a research laboratory from the School of Communication of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro dedicated to internet and social networks studies. Our job is to find out how new technologies, metadata and algorithms influence the public sphere and various aspects of society. In order to achieve this, we seek to combine a research approach with traditional elements, contemporary innovations and interdisciplinary perspectives — a challenge that requires an integration between theoretical foundations, statistical tools and efficient algorithms.

      Our work

Our lines of research are organized in five key fields, in which new digital relationships in network have generated significant effects on the social, economic, cultural and political life of Brazil and the world. We are constantly updating and developing new fronts of study and research. Contact us to learn more and sign up below to have first-hand access to our work.
